Hewitt into second round

THE hot streak of Australia's Lleyton Hewitt continued here tonight as he powered into the second round of the Australian Open tennis at the expense of American Paul Goldstein. On a marathon night session on day two at Melbourne Park, Hewitt did not clinch his 6-2 6-7 7-6 6-4 victory until just before 2am and afterwards admitted it had been a long night. "It has taken a bit out of me but I will be all right in two days time," he said after the win. Hewitt is the eighth Australian male through to the second round but the only one left in the bottom half of the draw after Scott Draper and Jason Stoltenberg were beaten earlier today. The South Australian, who won titles in both Adelaide and Sydney in the leadup to the Australian Open, will now meet Spain's Alex Corretja in the second round. Hewitt, who needed three and a quarter hours to tame the 90th ranked Goldstein tonight, defeated Corretja only last week in Sydney on his way to claiming the Adidas International title.
